Without a doubt, the most recognizable broadcast face, voice and flamboyant wardrobe in Canadian hockey is the one and only Don “Grapes” Cherry. Cherry’s momentous rise to broadcast fandom continues its tale in Wrath of Grapes: The Don Cherry Story II, now available on DVD.

In the sequel to the first series, Wrath of Grapes II takes us from Cherry’s last days of coaching the Boston Bruins, right up to his current days on Coaches Corner during Hockey Night in Canada. Interspersed in his mature years are his recollections of his youth and how his past has affected him as an adult.

It’s hard for anyone not to become wrapped up in the life story of a man who has dominated Canadian sports broadcasting for the last three decades. The production team did a wonderful job of convincingly recreating the multitude of eras while keeping the story tight.

Jared Kesso (I Love You Beth Cooper) does an eerily incredible job of portraying the legendary coach. Not only did he get Cherry’s physicality down, but his voice imitation is uncannily spot on. Close your eyes and you’ll think its Don himself yelling at you.

For the DVD release, the three hour long feature delivers solid audio and video quality. On top of this, an intriguing Behind-The-Scenes featurette is included that takes you through most every aspect of the production.

Bottom Line: For fans and newcomers, you’ll enjoy every second of Cherry’s rocky story from brilliant coach to sensational broadcaster.

Runtime: Approx. 180 minutes

About David Budo

I started reviewing movies simply because I became tired of being told what I should like. I don’t believe in following anyone’s opinion but my own, so you know you are not reading the reviews of a Hollywood sheep. Not every movie is trying to win an Oscar. Some simply want to make us laugh, or give us an a adrenaline rush. I love any movie that speaks to me and accomplishes it’s goals. Currently, I’m the film critic for moviecheeks.ca, York Region Media Group and eventually the world. Let’s talk film! View all posts by David Budo
